What Areas Should You Prioritize When Preparing for the Microsoft SC-500 Exam?
Microsoft SC-500 exam is designed for the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate certification. The test is mainly about protecting identities, data, applications, compute, networks, and AI environments within Microsoft cloud platforms. The exam is also more focused on AI security than the old AZ-500 test, and thus there are some new topics that can be covered.
If you're preparing, here's where I'd put most of my study time: 1. Storage, databases, and networking This is the largest exam domain at 25–30%, so I wouldn't rush through it. Consider the protection of storage accounts and databases, network security groups, private endpoints, Azure Firewall, VPN security, and application layer security such as WAF. It would be helpful to have an idea of how each control works and when it can be used in a given security situation.
2. Identity, access, and governance Microsoft Entra ID is a major area to understand. Remember to allocate enough time to cover Conditional Access, MFA, RBAC, application and managed identities, Key Vault, and Azure Policy. Remember to think about scenarios in terms of who accesses which resource and what permissions they need.
3. Secure compute and AI Also, do not forget about VMs, containers, Application Platform Services, and Compute Security. In addition to the above, the current test covers AI security-related items like Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio agents, Microsoft Foundry, and Microsoft Entra Agent ID. It becomes more and more important to know how Identity, Access Control, security policies, and guardrails affect AI workloads.
4. Security posture and monitoring Get acquainted with Microsoft Defender for Cloud and Microsoft Sentinel. In regard to Defender for Cloud, be knowledgeable about security recommendations, postures, and workloads. In regard to Sentinel, be familiar with workspaces, data connectors, data collection, analytics, automation, and response.
5. Get some hands-on experience It is useful to read documentation, but practical training will make it easier to memorize all these points. If you have access to the Azure environment, practice with security settings and learn the controls.
6. Use practice questions to find weak areas After covering all the objectives of the test, practice questions will help determine what areas require more preparation and how well you can handle scenario questions. I found the practice for the SC-500 exam questions from CertBoosters were yet another source of preparation prior to taking the test.
The important aspect here is that you should review everything considering what the test requires from you and not just try to memorize everything.
Has anybody already taken the SC-500 exam? Which topics did you find required the most preparation?
